    After the initial assessment, if we decide to move forward, the preparation phase begins — and this is where the real work happens before your loved one ever enters the room.

    Preparation typically takes one to five days, depending on the model we're using and how quickly the family can come together. Here's what that looks like:

    Identifying the intervention team

    We'll talk about who should be involved. This isn't automatically "everyone." It's the people whose voices matter most to your loved one — and who can stay calm and on-message in a high-pressure moment. Sometimes that's four people. Sometimes it's seven. Sometimes it's two. Quality over quantity, every time.

    Writing the letters

    Each participant writes a letter to be read during the intervention. These aren't confrontational ultimatum speeches. They're honest expressions of love, specific examples of harm the writer has witnessed or experienced, and a clear request for the loved one to accept help today.

    I coach every participant on their letter. What to include, what to leave out, how to stay grounded when emotion runs high. This is the most emotionally demanding part of the preparation — and also the most powerful.

    Securing a treatment bed

    Before the intervention happens, we identify and confirm a treatment placement. That means a bed is reserved — we know where your loved one is going if they say yes. We don't walk into an intervention without a plan for that moment. If they agree to go, we want to move while the window is open.

    What Does the Intervention Day Actually Look Like?

    The day of the intervention, I arrive early. We do a final run-through with the family — usually 60–90 minutes — to answer last-minute questions, calm nerves, and review the plan. I talk through what to do if your loved one gets angry, tries to leave, or breaks down crying. We rehearse how to stay compassionate and firm at the same time.

    Then your loved one walks in. They don't know what's happening.

    I introduce myself, explain why everyone is gathered, and set the tone: this is an act of love, not an ambush. Each person reads their letter. The room is usually quiet. Sometimes there are tears. Sometimes there's anger. Sometimes — more often than you'd think — the person who is being intervened on already knows, deep down, that this moment was coming. And they're relieved.

    What Happens After the Intervention — Whether They Go or Not?

    If your loved one agrees to go to treatment, we move quickly. We've already confirmed the placement. There's a bag packed (yes, we recommend having that ready). Travel arrangements have been thought through. We escort them to treatment or hand off to a transport team — depending on the situation and geography.

    And then you exhale. And you probably cry. And then you wonder: now what?

    • Resist the urge to call every day. The treatment team will be in touch with you.
    • Start working on your own recovery — Al-Anon, therapy, or both. This isn't optional.
